Youthful High Spirits at Suzanne Dellal

Suzanne Dellal gives the stage to four young choreographers in their new production, an evening composed of three individual works: Kadam by Tzvika Iskias and Shiri Capuano Quantz; At the end she dies by Idan Porges; and Mushroom ‘Z’ by Nadav Zelner. Each dramatically different in its movement, staging, and sensibility; together they present a program of dance that reflects the diversity and talents of contemporary dance in Israel and the creative high spirits of youth.
Kadam opens with five ghostly figures, standing motionless at the back of the stage, their …

Musrara Mix 13, the eclectic, festive, international, multidisciplinary event, will take place from May 28 – 30, 2013 in the Musrara neighborhood, home to the Naggar school of Photography, Media, New Music, Animation and Phototherapy. Now in its 13th edition, the school has established a tradition of an arts festival with rich and diverse offerings, developed around a different theme each year. Diver Festival: May 16 – June 8, 2013

Dance – always moving, changing shape, exploring new ground. The Diver Festival seeks to express this spirit in a new festival that initiators and artistic directors Moshe Shecter Avshalom and Ido Feder say will be “the new front line of dance in Tel Aviv and Israel.”

Opening May 16th, the festival will take place over the course of four weekends, through June 8, 2013. What are the special characteristics of this festival? Discarding labels of “mainstream” vs. “fringe” or “alternative” dance, the festival seeks to present quality works by established and …

Beijing Dance Theatre to Perform Haze in Israel

The alluring Haze, choreographed by Wang Yuanuan and performed by the Beijing Dance Theatre, will premiere in Israel at the Israeli Opera, with four performances from June 5 – 8, 2013.

19 dancers move through the haze to music composed by Henryk Gorecki and Biosphere, evoking the sense of faltering uncertainty, inspired by the economic crisis and environmental concerns that began in 2009. Haze develops as a metaphor for the atmospheric fog of pollution and the spiritual dark mists of thought in times of difficulty.  The work focuses on the question …

At Your Place @ Suzanne Dellal

Avi Kaiser and Sergio Antonio take dance off the stage and into a more intimate place with their site-specific performance At Your Place. I had the pleasure of talking to Avi about the dancer/choreographers’ ongoing project, in anticipation of its performance at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in the context of Tel Aviv Dance 2013. Unlike conventional concert dance performances, this one will not take place in one of the centre’s performance halls, but rather in the dance studio.
Bringing Dance Closer to the Audience – Literally
“It’s a project that had different …

Dance Theatre of Harlem in Israel

Dance Theatre of Harlem will be performing in Israel at the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center from May 30th – and it promises to be a very special experience!
The excitement here is both onstage and behind the scenes, as this is a company with a mission and a message! Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Arthur Mitchell decided to start a school in the neighborhood where he grew up – Harlem – introducing children to dance and the arts, founding Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1969 with Karel …

Passione in Due

The intimate and complex relationships of dance to music, dancer to pianist, the dancer and the audience were woven into Emio Greco’s Passione in Due. Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion provided the musical theme for the performance, freely adapted by French composer Franck Krawczyk, who performed in this lovely and lively duet between dancer and pianist.

St. Matthew’s Passion is one of my favorite works, Krawczyk’s performance was beautiful and sensitive. I found the tender clarity of his  voice especially moving, perhaps in part because it is surprising to have the pianist …

Hillel Kogan: Dance and its Maladies

“I think that audiences today expect art to shock them,” commented dancer/choreographer Hillel Kogan, “people want to be shaken up, and experience extreme emotions. We glorify innovation, originality, surprise. Today’s audiences feel that they have seen it all and know everything. They want to see something new each day. If you shock them, they will simply take pleasure in the feeling. What could possibly shock anyone today? After the artists of Dada fomented the greatest revolution possible in the art world, what remains to be overthrown?”
The ultimate jester/philosopher in the …

Yasmeen Godder Premiere: See Her Change

Run, don’t walk, to see Yasmeen Godder’s new work: See Her Change. The premiere performances will take place at Suzanne Dellal on April 22nd & 23rd, 2013 at 21:00.
Change is the operative term here, in more ways than one. I’ve just had the exhilarating experience of seeing a full run in the studio that made my heart race and sent a myriad of thoughts through my head in every direction. Yet I know that when I see this performance onstage at Suzanne Dellal next week that it will be a …
