American independent film director Debra Granik will be in Israel from August 2 – 10, 2011 as part of a program to promote “Women in Film” in Israel, sponsored by the US State Department. Granik’s first full length feature Down to the Bone (2004) won a Dramatic Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival, and Winter’s Bone (2010), screened at the 2010 Jerusalem International Film Festival, won the Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Film at Sundance and received four Oscar nominations.

Winter’s Bone will be screened at the Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Holon Cinematheques, followed by a discussion on “Women in Film” with Debra Granik. While in Israel, Granik will conduct workshops for students at the Sam Spiegel Film School in Jerusalem and Minshar in Tel Aviv, and will tour the Ma’aleh Film School in Jerusalem. Granik will be meeting with outstanding high school students from all over Israel who participated in a greenhouse program for young filmmakers, and will address the group of filmmakers participating in the Tel Aviv Los Angeles partnership workshops. Granik will also travel to the West Bank to promote women in film among Palestinian filmmakers.

Want to meet Debra Granik in person? The US Embassy is running a contest on facebook, and the winner will chat over coffee with Granik.

Screening dates for Winter’s Bone: August 3, 2011 at the Jerusalem Cinematheque, August 4, 2011 at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, August 6, 2011 at the Holon Cinematheque.

  1. Shalom, Debra. I am a fellow Brandeis alum (’81), and am so proud of you. I heard you speak at a preview of Winter’s Bone at The Ritz Movie Theater, and was very impressed with your “heimishness”, intelligence and immense talent. We spoke after the film, and you were extremely unassuming and gracious. Absolutely loved Winter’s Bone.Thought it was super creative and brilliant.Want to view your other “Bone” film. 🙂 So glad you are going to Israel to inspire and empower women in film there.I lived in Jerusalem eight years and adore the Cinemateque there. I know the Israelis will love you and the film, and you will be enchanted by the people and country.Have a wonderful trip! Adrienne
