This haunting, brutal and unimaginable  confession unfolds before our eyes in the most violent city in the  world. The filmmaker overcame the challenges of many characters, and constantly changing situations, to craft a film that challenged both the political brain and the human heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12444\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12444\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_2303a-place-of-her-own.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12444\" title=\"IMG_2303a place of her own\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_2303a-place-of-her-own.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_2303a-place-of-her-own.jpg 594w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_2303a-place-of-her-own-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12444\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sigal Emmanuel receives the Tel Aviv Mayor&#39;s award for &quot;A Place of Her Own&quot;\/Photo: Elizur Reuveni<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Tel Aviv Mayor\u2019s Prize for a First Film was awarded to \u201c<strong>A Place of Her Own<\/strong>\u201d, Director, Cinematography and Research: Sigal Emmanuel; Production: Dikla Barkai; Production Company: Abot Barkai; Script &amp; Editing: Ayala Bengad; Soundtrack: Itay Halevi; Music: Dikla.<br \/>\nThe jury\u2019s decision: \u201cThe jury felt that \u2018A Place of Her Own\u2019 was an impressively accomplished film which demonstrated both a resilient and tenacious filmmaker, and ability to comprehensibly craft a complex and challenging narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Honorable Mention was awarded to \u201c<strong>Tami and Jacob \u2013 My Parents<\/strong>,\u201d Director, Cinematography &amp; Research: Nir Horvitz; Production, Production Company &amp; Editing: Tali Shemesh; Script: Tali Shemesh, Nir Horvitz.<br \/>\nThe jury\u2019s decision: \u201cA small and optimistic film about people who chose life, showing that even in the most despairing moments of existence- we can still find compassion and grace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Best Cinematography was awarded to Daniel Kedem for his work in \u201c<strong>Under the Rug<\/strong>.\u201d The jury\u2019s decision: \u201cThis was a film that combined considered and insightful observational footage, with a level of skillful and carefully constructed artistic elements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tal Shefi received the award for Best Editing for her work in \u201c<strong>Life in Stills<\/strong>.\u201d The jury\u2019s decision: \u201cA masterly grasp of narrative combined with the ability to subtly detail a profound and beautiful\u00a0\u00a0 relationship with both humor and poignancy is what set this film apart.\u201d<br \/>\nRuthie Shatz and Adi Barash received the award for Best Research for their work on \u201c<strong>The Collaborator and His Family<\/strong>.\u201d The jury\u2019s decision: \u201cThe ability to find a family whose members are so distinctively unique, powerful and self sufficient, facing adversity with pride and courage is admirable achievement in research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additional screenings of the winning films will take place on May 20th &amp; 21st:<br \/>\nFriday, May 20, 2011<br \/>\n12:00 Life in Stills Cinematheque 1<br \/>\n12:00 Darwin Cinematheque 2<br \/>\n14:00 El Sicario Room 164 Cinematheque 1<br \/>\n16:00 Under the Rug ZOA Meyerhof<br \/>\n18:00 The Collaborator and His Family ZOA Meyerhof<br \/>\nSaturday, May 21, 2011<br \/>\n14:00 A Place of Her Own ZOA Meyerhof<br \/>\n16:30 Life in Stills ZOA Meyerhof<br \/>\n22:00 Tami and Jacob \u2013 My Parents ZOA Meyerhof<\/p>\n<p>Jury for the International Competition:<br \/>\nArik Lahav Leibovitch, feature and documentary film editor, whose work includes \u201cLebanon\u201d (Golden Lion Award Venice Film Festival), \u201cThe Band\u2019s Visit\u201d, \u201cLoving Sophia\u201d (DocAviv 2010 Editing Award), and \u201cTeacher Irena\u201d (DocAviv 2010 Editing Award) among other films.<\/p>\n<p>Ibtisam Mara\u2019ana, independent director and producer for cinema and television. Her films include: \u201cParadise Lost\u201d, \u201cBadal\u201d (winner of Hot Docs 2006), \u201cThree Times Divorced\u201d (Best Documentary \u2013 DocAviv 2007) \u201cLady Kul el-Arab (IDFA Special Jury Award, 2008) and \u201c77 Steps\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chris McDonald, Executive Director of Hot Docs Festival in Toronto, North America\u2019s largest documentary festival.<\/p>\n<p>Hila Medalia, director\/producer whose films include: \u201cAfter the Storm\u201d (Crystal Heart Award), \u201cTo Die in Jerusalem\u201d and \u201cHappy You\u2019re Alive.\u201d She was senior producer of \u201c39 Pounds of Love\u201d (HBO Cinema, winner of the Ophir Award).<\/p>\n<p>Brian Newman, founder of Sub-Genre Consulting, was recently CEO of the Tribeca Film Institute, and the executive director of RenewMedia and IMAGE Film &amp; Video Center.<\/p>\n<p>Jury for the Israeli Competition:<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Hock (Austria), Director of TV Sales at Autlook Filmsales, a worldwide sales agency for powerful, daring and acclaimed docs.<\/p>\n<p>Tabitha Jackson (UK), Channel 4\u2019s Commissioning Editor for Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Greg Sanderson (UK), Executive Producer of Arts for the BBC, and Editor of the BBC&#8217;s flagship cultural program, &#8216;The Review Show&#8217;. From 2006-2010 he was Executive Producer of Storyville, the world renowned feature documentary strand, where he was responsible for notable successes such as &#8216;The English Surgeon&#8217;, &#8216;Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired&#8217;, &#8216;Marathon Boy&#8217; and Steve James&#8217; latest film &#8216;The Interrupters&#8217;. He is on the Advisory Boards of Sheffield Doc Fest and Edinburgh International TV Festival, and has been an assessor for ITVS, IDFA, Sheffield Doc Fest and Documentary Campus.<\/p>\n<p>Itai Valdman, Time Out Tel Aviv magazine editor.
