In his words, music and actions, Degibri expresses the spirit of jazz \u2013 living in a musical space without boundaries or borders \u2013 whether geographic, generational, or creative. Two of these young musicians were invited to perform with him at the International Exposure, Gadi Lehavi on piano and Ofri Nehemia on drums, who along with Simon Star on bass opened the music festival on an inspiring note, performing pieces from Degibri\u2019s latest album: Israel Song. Director Barak Weiss with the members of the artistic committee \u2013 Lea Lior, Dubi Lenz and Daniel Sarid, put together a diverse program that presented an enticing look at the Israeli jazz and world music scene. The six concerts included between three to six mini-sessions, moving with ease from Klezmer to free jazz, intimate flute solos to bold brass sounds, drawing on influences from hip hop to Andalusia. It was an exhilarating musical journey. Q &amp; A sessions between performances allowed time for lightening-speed set up onstage for the next performers, and offered a chance for everyone \u2013 international guests and fans alike, to ask any question from \u201cHow do you bring Middle Eastern influences into a Western jazz trio?\u201d to \u201cwas it hard to move alone to New York?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16151\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16151\" style=\"width: 558px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2976.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16151 \" title=\"IMG_2976\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2976.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2976.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2976-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16151\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Alaev Family\/Photo: Ayelet Dekel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One might compose an Israeli portrait from these materials \u2013 the warm, informal mingling of people of all ages, with different roots and ethnic traditions, speaking different languages, creating and listening to music \u2013 a sound that is eclectic, wild, tender, rhythmic, lyric, liturgic, anthemic, revolutionary, ancient and new. The adrenaline-charged Yiddish acrobatics of Ramzailech ensure that Eastern European Jewish musical traditions will \u201clive on as music not as a monument.\u201d Family and music traditions come alive onstage with the Alaev family, three generations rocking the soul with Jewish Bukharan songs and Tajiki poems: \u201cFrom here joy rises\/blessing will come\/warmth will come\/until the end of day\/stay with me in this rhythm\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16149\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16149\" style=\"width: 558px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2837ninobitton.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16149 \" title=\"IMG_2837ninobitton\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2837ninobitton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2837ninobitton.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2837ninobitton-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16149\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nino Bitton\/Photo: Ayelet Dekel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nino Bitton holds mystery in his fingers as endless tales spiral from the oud, a heritage that reverberates through the music of his many students.\u00a0 Tradition was heard in jazz translation from Omri Mor, who performed new jazz arrangements of Andalusian music learned from Nino. Connecting with roots through new compositions, Uri Gurvich described his process as, \u201ca re-discovery of the music you didn\u2019t realize you grew up with.\u201d Gadi Seri\u2019s Sapari project lifted their voices with ancient Hebrew devotional song, Shabate brings an Ethiopian rhythm to the songs of King David, while Zohar Fresco breathes a lively spirit into Miriam\u2019s timbrel with \u201cmelodies that come from the pulse of the drum.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16152\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16152\" style=\"width: 558px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3824.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16152 \" title=\"IMG_3824\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3824.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3824.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_3824-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16152\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tomer Bar\/Photo: Ayelet Dekel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Music that \u201cemphasizes the melody\u201d with a classical jazz-blues sound came from the youthful Tomer Bar Trio in songs like \u201cThe Late Hours\u201d of which Bar said, \u201cEver since I was three years old I thought the blues lived there and I wanted to live there too.\u201d Eyal Talmudi and Malox \u201cbring folk into a punk aggressive club attitude\u201d and Albert Beger invites the listener to join him on a journey to the unknown, saying \u201ceverything can work together no matter what dissonance or consonance.\u201d Andra La Moussia blurs the borders between street and studio in a celebration of sound: \u201cwe call it music from the streets of Jerusalem\u2026everything we live, breath and hear comes out in our music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>International Exposure for Jazz and World Music 2011 is an initiative of the Yellow Submarine and Barak Weiss, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Levontin 7 music club, with generous support from the Ministry of Culture and Sports and The Jerusalem Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Director: Barak Weiss<br \/>\nArtistic Committee: Lea Lior, Dubi Lenz, Daniel Sarid, Barak Weiss<br \/>\nProducers: The Yellow Submarine Staff \u2013 Atcha Bar, Director;
