On that small, disregarded street, there is a bar. Within that modest bar, at least on every Tuesday night, there is jazz. Good, solid, classic jazz. The cozy atmosphere, coupled with the repose of Chatsav\u2019s beautifully executed tributes to jazz\u2019s most revered artists, made the evening an unprecedented success.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20021\" style=\"width: 579px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cmljz4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20021\" title=\"cmljz4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cmljz4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"579\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cmljz4.jpg 579w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cmljz4-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jonathan Greenstein (sax) and Donovan Bullen (bass)\/Photo: Che<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Joined by guest tenor saxophonist Jonathan Greenstein, the ensemble opened with a quintessential Davis favourite, allowing the tempo to soak in before breaking out of the mold and into an elegant improvisation \u2013 a classic amalgamation of the age-old and the insightfully original. The trio\u2019s striking fluidity, musical chemistry and discernable serenity transcended into our small audience.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20023\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20023\" style=\"width: 454px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cmljz54.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20023\" title=\"cmljz54\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cmljz54.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cmljz54.jpg 454w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cmljz54-258x300.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Xenia Course\/Photo: Che<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Concluding the evening with two Ella Fitzgerald cover songs by guest singer Xenia Course, the ensemble demonstrated a performance of experience, aptitude, and insistence on the undeniable debonair of jazz.<\/p>\n<p>The first time I attended the trio\u2019s performance at the Dancing Camel, I remember commenting on what a shame it was that the bar (also a brewery) was in such an uninviting location. Yet last night Gilad said something whimsical that I felt perfectly characterized both his musical conscientiousness and the genre itself: \u201cJazz is sort of about being the outsider, of staying away from the spotlight of mainstream culture.
