Shalom Aleichem was a master of creating character through dialogue, here, the adaptation to the stage makes full use of all the theatrical elements \u2013 costumes, set, lighting, movement and music, to bring the story to vibrant life.<br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20162\" style=\"width: 358px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/523595_4241179824597_287485794_n-devoted-scholar-wife.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-20162 \" title=\"523595_4241179824597_287485794_n devoted scholar wife\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/523595_4241179824597_287485794_n-devoted-scholar-wife.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/523595_4241179824597_287485794_n-devoted-scholar-wife.jpg 448w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/523595_4241179824597_287485794_n-devoted-scholar-wife-227x300.jpg 227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eran Mor and Rona-Lee Shimon in Stempenyu &#8211; devout scholar and devoted wife\/Photo: Elizur Reuveni<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Stempenyu<\/em> is as much about music and its role in our lives as it is about the love and loss in the lives of its characters. <em>Stempenyu<\/em> (Yehezkel Lazarov) is a violinist, a womanizer who has been known to \u201csometimes propose when drunk\u201d and leader of a Klezmer band that, ironically, is best known for playing at weddings. Stempenyu\u2019s violin draws all into its spell, including the lovely Rochale (Rona-Lee Shimon) wed to Talmudic scholar Menashe-Mendl (Eran Mor) who lives in books. Oh yes, there\u2019s going to be trouble in the <em>shtetl<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Klezmer is the essence of this play and the music by Assaf Talmudi is wonderful, that familiar sound somewhere between a cry of pain and joy that makes the heart dance. The soundtrack for the play was recorded by a superb ensemble of musicians:\u00a0 Sanya Kroiter (violin), Eyal Talmudi (clarinet), Gershon Weisserfhurer (tuba and oud), Assaf Talmudi (accordion), and Dan Sela (double bass).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20163\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20163\" style=\"width: 579px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/480982_4241107382786_1594587679_n-klezmer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20163 \" title=\"480982_4241107382786_1594587679_n klezmer\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/480982_4241107382786_1594587679_n-klezmer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"579\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/480982_4241107382786_1594587679_n-klezmer.jpg 579w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/480982_4241107382786_1594587679_n-klezmer-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stempenyu and the Klezmers: Matan Zrachia, Oded Zadok, Assaf Salhov\/Photo: Elizur Reuveni<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The talented Lazarov makes a brilliant move in expressing the music through movement, watching the Klezmer band \u2013 Matan Zrachia, Oded Zadok and Assaf Salhov, is one of the many delights of this production. The use of movement in the play evoked for me Shalom Aleichem\u2019s use of speech to define character through use of different phrases, quotes and misquotes, erudite, pseudo-erudite and colloquial speech, and the inter-weaving of Yiddish with European languages; setting the Klezmer musicians apart from the rest of the community, a wild and lively tribe within the tribe, with their own strange customs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20164\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20164\" style=\"width: 578px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/252764_4241092982426_283312334_n-orli-alon-s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20164\" title=\"252764_4241092982426_283312334_n orli alon s\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/252764_4241092982426_283312334_n-orli-alon-s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"578\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/252764_4241092982426_283312334_n-orli-alon-s.jpg 578w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/252764_4241092982426_283312334_n-orli-alon-s-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dvossi-Malka (Orli Silbershats) and Chayim-Yossef (Alon Dahan)\/Photo: Elizur Reuveni<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The choreography plays a major role throughout the play, conveying mood and character eloquently; funny, exuberant, sensual, poignant, and always compelling. The cast is excellent \u2013 together they create a memorable community. Lazarov is at his scintillating charming best as the ultimate <em>shtetl<\/em> bad boy musical genius Stempenyu, and Rona-Lee Shimon shines as Rochale, a woman of intelligence who yearns for a life full of passion and meaning, struggling with her conscience as she endeavors to choose her destiny.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20165\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20165\" style=\"width: 428px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/554008_4241149703844_866424131_n-rona-lee.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20165\" title=\"554008_4241149703844_866424131_n rona lee\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/554008_4241149703844_866424131_n-rona-lee.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/554008_4241149703844_866424131_n-rona-lee.jpg 428w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/554008_4241149703844_866424131_n-rona-lee-285x300.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20165\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rochale (Rona-Lee Shimon)\/Photo: Elizur Reuveni<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rona-Lee&#8217;s talents as a dancer and stage presence are well-complemented by her expressive sensitivity in this role. I am intrigued by the representations of women in this play, from Rochale to Dvossi-Malka (Orli Silbershats) who always has advice for everyone, delivered in her tell-it-like-it-is dugri verging on vulgar honest style;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20166\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20166\" style=\"width: 403px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/532300_4241115702994_876876008_n-freydl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20166\" title=\"532300_4241115702994_876876008_n freydl\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/532300_4241115702994_876876008_n-freydl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"403\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/532300_4241115702994_876876008_n-freydl.jpg 403w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/532300_4241115702994_876876008_n-freydl-209x300.jpg 209w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freydl (Edna Blilious)\/Photo: Elizur Reuveni<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Freydel (Edna Blilious), the tough, honest, pragmatist, who manipulates her way to achieve her heart\u2019s desire, her vulnerability arousing empathy as well as laughter; and sweet dreamer Etl-Chaya (Liat Har-Lev) who all too willingly sees the world through the eyes of the man she loves, provides one of the play\u2019s most poignant moments, as the dreamer awakens to a heart-breaking reality. Chaim-Yossef (Alon Dahan) the amiable, not-quite downtrodden husband of Dvossi-Malka, radiates warmth and a compassionate intelligence.
