Taking food as his focal point, Kolben explores the personal, psychological, cultural and historical aspects of food in its different contexts, customs, relationships and associations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20422\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20422\" style=\"width: 348px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMG_7153.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-20422 \" title=\"IMG_7153\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMG_7153.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"348\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMG_7153.jpg 435w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMG_7153-238x300.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 348px) 100vw, 348px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kme&#8217;hin &#8211; Kolben Dance Company\/Photo: Ayelet Dekel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Kme\u2019hin<\/em> means truffles in Hebrew, yet for Hebrew speakers the word evokes another word, <em>Kmi\u2019ha<\/em>, which translates as: yearning, desire, or craving. \u201cIt was the most expensive thing that I could think of in terms of food,\u201d said Kolben, commenting on the relationship between the title and the themes dealt with in the dance, \u201cthe distance between truffles and bread &#8211; which is also on the stage &#8211; there is a tension: the distance between the refined culinary connoisseur and that which is essential for survival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Kolben Dance Company makes its home in Jerusalem, and there are echoes of the cultural-religious space of Jerusalem in this work as well. Viewing a short preview of the work, most evident was an explicit reference to Leonardo Da Vinci\u2019s painting The Last Supper, in which the central figure is given an apple, connecting the scene with the Biblical story of Genesis. On the religious references in the work, Kolben said, \u201cThat man appears here\u2026 it connects us. Not everyone has bread on the table as a matter of course. We are artists, people of culture, the culture of food, the culture of behavior \u2013 all of which does not prevent us from eating one another alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kme\u2019hin will be performed at the Suzanne Dellal Center on July 17th and 23rd.
