Hot Jazz, Museum Tel Aviv\u2019s most renowned jazz series, is returning this October with a piquant line-up of Latin, Bossa Nova and Creole style jazz musicians from all around the world. Musical director Ziv Ben has put together an innovative installment that showcases some of the world\u2019s zestiest jazz musicians, incorporating the tradition saxophone, piano and guitar with a generous batch of vocals, clarinet and harp.<\/p>\n

The first show of this year\u2019s Hot Jazz series will premier in late October and continue through July 2013.<\/p>\n

The season is heading off with Columbian harp virtuoso Edmar Castaneda<\/strong>, whose music was previously characterized by the New York Times as \u201calmost a world unto itself\u201d. His versatility and force on this unusual instrument is revolutionary in the field of jazz, and since immigrating to NYC in 1994 has established himself as one of the cities most original musicians. His compositions are traditional, spiritual, engrossing and sophisticatedly nuanced with chordal intricacy.<\/p>\n

Columbian singer Andrea Tierra<\/strong> will be performing together with Castaneda, infusing her signature styles of Latin, jazz, flamenco, and New York spunk. The exotic combination of the harp together with Tierra\u2019s poetic contralto voice is a haunting and deeply intimate portrayal of Columbian fusion.<\/p>\n

In December, American tenor saxophonists Joel Frahm<\/strong> together with Israeli musicians Amit Friedman<\/strong> on saxophone, Nitai Hershkovitz<\/strong> on piano, Gilad Abro<\/strong> on bass and Shay <\/strong>Zelman<\/strong> on drums will be playing a tribute to the colossal 1930s American saxophonist Sonny Rollins.<\/p>\n

In light of the recent turmoil hurricanes have afflicted on New Orleans, Creole-inspired American jazz clarinetist Evan Christopher<\/strong> will be playing a New Orleans style homage to prominent Creole clarinetists of the 1940s, Sidney Beshet. Today, Christopher is one of the country\u2019s most prominent ambassadors for the New Orleans jazz scene in both musical and educational fields.<\/p>\n

French jazz vocalist Cyrille Aime<\/strong> has established herself as one of the leading musicians in the jazz world, using her voice as a magnanimous, deeply soulful instrument. She is internationally renowned as one of the most influential voices of modern jazz, and will be performing a series of contemporary covers and original compositions.<\/p>\n

Another prominent vocalist set to perform is Kansas born Angela Hagenbach<\/strong>, one of the top Brazilian jazz singers in America. She has thus far released two albums and has been critically acclaimed as one of the world\u2019s leading jazz musicians.<\/p>\n

Puerto Rican born Salsa singer Frankie Vasquez<\/strong> will bring in the seventh performance. Vasquez\u2019s long history of music saw his establishment of two Salsa bands, collaboration with multiple jazz musicians and a fifteen-year involvement with the New York band New Swing Sextet. Vasquez will share the stage with local Salsa band Walakat, Israel\u2019s most established Latin style Salsa ensemble.<\/p>\n

Maria de Barros<\/strong> will conclude this year\u2019s series in homage to her godmother, the proclaimed \u201cQueen of Morna\u201d Cesaria Evora, who passed away earlier this year. Morna is a musical genre from Cape Verde that combines dance, clarinet, cavaquinho, piano, accordion and guitar. De Barros\u2019s singing style oscillates between her traditional Sengali roots and modern American influence.<\/p>\n

Hot Jazz series will take place in in Museum Tel Aviv and a number of additional venues throughout Israel.<\/p>\n
