Next season will celebrate some of the greatest French composers with two operas to be performed for the first time at the Israel Opera. The trio of opera festivals across the country will continue with shows at Masada, the Sultan\u2019s Pool in Jerusalem, and Acco (Acre). Also, young opera fans and those who don\u2019t know it yet will get the full opera-going experience with productions for children of all ages. The Liturgical Series and the Symphonic Series both include some of the greatest hits of the respective genres, with some very special guests scheduled to appear.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31568\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31568\" style=\"width: 583px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Perlenfischer-1small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31568\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Perlenfischer-1small.jpg\" alt=\"Pear Fishers\" width=\"583\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Perlenfischer-1small.jpg 583w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Perlenfischer-1small-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pear Fishers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bizet\u2019s <em>Pearl Fishers<\/em> is a masterpiece that sometimes gets lost in the shadow of Bizet\u2019s more famous opera, <em>Carmen<\/em>. Now it will be given a chance to shine again with a new production. Holding the baton we\u2019ll have Francesco Ciampa, formerly Daniel Oren\u2019s assistant at Salerno. Robert MacPherson and Alexei Dolgov will sing Nadir, and Hila Baggio and Alla Vassilevitsky will share the role of Leila.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31569\" style=\"width: 581px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Romeo-and-Juliet_Alain-Hanel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31569\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Romeo-and-Juliet_Alain-Hanel.jpg\" alt=\"Romeo et Juliette\/Photo: Alain Hanel\" width=\"581\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Romeo-and-Juliet_Alain-Hanel.jpg 581w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Romeo-and-Juliet_Alain-Hanel-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Romeo et Juliette\/Photo: Alain Hanel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We\u2019ll hear two very different Giuseppe Verdis by exploring the growth of his music: his Shakespearean masterpiece <em>Macbeth<\/em>, written at the start of his career (Ira Bertman and Luca Gallo will portray the dynamic duo), and <em>Il Trovatore<\/em>, part of the Rig-Trav-Trov trio of operas written by Verdi in his prime. Daniel Calegari will conduct, and as the Troubador of the title, Manrico, we\u2019ll hear Gustavo Porta.<br \/>\nWe\u2019ll have more operatic Shakespeare with Gounod\u2019s <em>Romeo et Juliette<\/em>. The Budapest Operetta Theatre will return with a production of <em>Die Fledermaus<\/em>, a waltz-filled and fun-filled operetta which is ideally experienced with a glass of champagne in hand. The Lithuanian National Opera will bring us their production of <em>The Marriage of Figaro<\/em>.<br \/>\nWe\u2019ll have Rossini\u2019s madcap <em>La Cenerentola<\/em> conducted by Daniel Cohen and with our now almost regular cast of buffa soloists: Annalisa Stroppa and our own Na\u2019ama Goldman sharing the title role, Christian S and Bruno de Simone.<\/p>\n<p>David Pountney\u2019s production of <em>Rigoletto<\/em> will be performed again this year, this time as part of the Opera Festival in Jerusalem at the Sultan\u2019s Pool. The festival at Acco will feature performances of Mozart\u2019s <em>Abduction from the Seraglio<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Masada festival will grow next year and feature not one but two operas. One is Verdi\u2019s <em>Un ballo in maschera<\/em>, which was performed last year on the opera house stage. The second is probably the best choice, at the very least historically, for the Masada Opera Festival \u2013 drumroll, please \u2013 Saint-Saens\u2019 <em>Samson and Delilah<\/em>. The singers have not yet been announced but given Maestro Oren\u2019s penchant for finding and grooming exceptional artists around the globe, you can rest assured that the voices will be satisfactory.<\/p>\n<p>During Sukkot, the Opera will stage three operas aimed at a younger audience in the main auditorium, giving kids a chance to experience the larger-than-life setting of opera as part of a mature audience. <em>The Magic Flute<\/em>, <em>La Cenerentola<\/em>, and David Sebba\u2019s <em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em> can give the young listener a taste of what the crazy, fabulous world of opera can offer.
