Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/354047461708086\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">facebook event <\/a>for updates.<\/p>\n<p><b>THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Ethio-jazz musician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HailuMergiaOfficial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hailu Mergia<\/strong><\/a> will be performing at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BarbyOfficial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barby<\/a> (52 Kibbutz Galuyot) \u2013 seriously not to be missed!!! Born in northern Ethiopia, Mergia began playing piano and accordion in the Ethiopian military at age 14. As a keyboardist (organ &amp; Moog synthesizer) with the Walias Band, made musical history on many levels \u2013for their innovative instrumentals, drawing on Ethiopian traditional music with jazz interpretations and contemporary instruments; and they were the first band to buy their own instruments and gain independence from club owners. The band not only became popular in Ethiopia in its time, but also contributed to the wider rediscovery of Ethiopian jazz. Musiqawi Silt, composed by Girma B\u00e8y\u00e8n\u00e8, recorded on their album <em>Tche Belew, (<\/em>with Mulatu Astatke on vibraphone) in 1977 was released on \u00c9thiopiques 13: The Golden Seventies \u2013 Ethiopian Groove\u00a0in 2003, and covered by many other bands. When the Walias band came to the US in 1981, touring with Mahmoud Ahmed, several members, including Mergia, decided to remain there. Settling in the Washington DC area, Mergia initially formed the Zula Band, but made his living as a taxi driver, keeping his keyboard in the trunk, and taking it out to practice in the back seat between customers. In 1985, Mergia went into the studio and recorded Hailu Mergia &amp; His Classical Instrument, laying down tracks with drum machine, Rhodes piano, Yamaha DX7 and accordion. Aside from Ethiopian jazz cognoscenti, Mergia&#8217;s music remained mostly in the back seat, until Brian Shimkovitz (Awesome Tapes from Africa) came across a cassette, and contacted Mergia. The rest is history. Mergia has since been performing to great acclaim in the US, and it is a great thrill to have him perform in Tel Aviv! Opening for Mergia will be Israeli trumpeter Sefi Zisling, who recently released his debut solo album. Doors open at 20:30, show begins an hour+ later.
