Opera Director Hannah Munitz noted that the \u201ccuriosity of the audience, always open to new experiences\u201d enables the opera to expand and develop in new directions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Opera<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The 2010 to 2011 season will include two operas never before performed in Israel: Verdi\u2019s <em>Ernani<\/em> and Donizetti\u2019s <em>La Fille du Regiment<\/em>. Based on Victor Hugo\u2019s <em>Hernani<\/em> (1830), <em>Ernani<\/em> will premiere in January 2011, conducted by George Pehlivanian (currently conducting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/?p=3821 \" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Barber of Seville<\/em> <\/a>thru March 27th), with soloists Michelle Crider, Paata Burchuladze, Pierrot Giulliacci and Vassily Gerrello. <em>La Fille du Regiment<\/em>, conducted by Alberto Zedda, will follow in February.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4064\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4064\" style=\"width: 441px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_9883JavierAbreu_ElizurReuveniB.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4064 \" title=\"IMG_9883JavierAbreu_ElizurReuveniB\" src=\"http:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_9883JavierAbreu_ElizurReuveniB.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"441\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_9883JavierAbreu_ElizurReuveniB.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.midnighteast.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/IMG_9883JavierAbreu_ElizurReuveniB-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Javier Abreu (currently Almaviva in The Barber of Seville) sings an aria from La Fille du Regiment\/Photo: Elizur Reuveni<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Opera lovers can also look forward to the return of three favorite operas: Bellini\u2019s Norma conducted by Daniel Oren in April 2011, Mozart\u2019s The Magic Flute, conducted by Israeli Opera Music Director David Stern in May 2011, and Verdi\u2019s La Traviata, conducted by Omer Wellber in June\/July 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Bart\u00f3k\u2019s Bluebeard\u2019s Castle, promises to be a feast for the eye as well as the ear, with set design by glass sculptor Dale Chihuly, who will be present for the December 2010 opening. Another 20th century presence on the opera stage in the coming season will be Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Dmitri Shostakovich, a joint production with the Kirov Opera which returns to the Israeli stage.<\/p>\n<p>Even as preparations are underway for the grand performance of Verdi\u2019s Nabucco at Massada, Munitz announced that a new tradition has begun and the opera will produce the composer\u2019s Aida at Massada in June 2011, conducted by Daniel Oren. The opera season will open in November with the arrival of The Cape Town Opera in their first visit to Israel for the performance of Porgy and Bess. Opening the dance program will be Flemish\/Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui\u2019s <em>Sutra<\/em>, inspired by Buddhist Shaolin monks and created in collaboration with Turner prize-winning artist Antony Gormley. 17 monks perform in this intriguing work, accompanied by live music composed by Szymon Brz\u00f3ska for piano, percussion and strings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many acclaimed choreographers will return to perform in Israel. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will reprise the incomparable \u201cRevelations\u201d as well as performing several other works. Choreographers Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, former Ailey stars and founders of Complexions Contemporary Ballet Company back to Tel Aviv. Spain\u2019s National Dance Company will perform Nacho Duato\u2019s <em>Multiplicity, Forms of Silence and Emptiness<\/em> set to a collage of Johann Sebastian Bach. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet will perform Orff\u2019s Carmina Burana and BJM Danse Montr\u00e9al (Ballet Jazz Montr\u00e9al) will Annabelle Lopez Ochoa\u2019s Zip Zap Zoom, Locked Up Laura, and Aszure Barton\u2019s Les Chambres des Jacques.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Music<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In addition to the Liturgical and Symphonic music series, the Opera introduces two new programs: World Music under the artistic direction of Idan Reichel, and All the Hues of Music, a series of five chamber concerts with internationally acclaimed soloists. The Classic Rock series will feature Asaf Avidan and the Mojos, Barry Saharof, Ninette Tayeb, and Keren Ann performing classical arrangements of their music.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Israeli Opera continues its performances beyond Tel Aviv with La Traviata at the Sultan\u2019s Pool in Jerusalem in June, and in the community with L\u2019elisir d\u2019Amour at the Roman theatre in Beit She\u2019an.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Opera director Munitz says: \u201cEither you love opera or you are not yet acquainted with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Midnight East invites you to get to know the Israeli Opera and fall in love.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>AYELET DEKEL<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Israeli Opera, celebrating 25 years of creativity and performance, is already looking forward to the new season, with an exciting program of Israeli and international artists.
