The Chinese dance scene will visit Israel as two leading companies will be performing at the Suzanne Dellal Centre from February 12 \u2013 16, 2019. The Beijing Modern Dance Company (BMDC) will present Blooming of Time<\/em> by the company’s Artistic Director, choreographer Gao Yanjinzi, and the Gansu Provincial Troupe of Song and Dance will present The Evening Party<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Blooming of Time<\/em> is a work concerned with nature, the passage of time and the seasons of life. BMDC first performed in Israel in 2009, in the context of Tel Aviv Dance. At the time, choreographer Gao Yanjinzi participated in a talk held before the performance, her comments from that time offer much insight into her approach to dance:<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, dance is my mother tongue. Because dance is my mother tongue I would like to communicate with the audience with dance first and not words. If I use words first the dance becomes pale, no color. Because you come especially today, the communication will be meaningful. I believe that everybody will look at the performance as your own child.<\/em><\/p>\n

Chinese traditional dance is my mother. She nurses me and teaches me how to walk and speak, but I will use my life experience [to create dance]. Modern dance doesn\u2019t stop, doesn\u2019t stick on one style. Whatever you touch, see, experience, is going to be your dance language. Time is now, what you are experiencing, in this moment you\u2019re experiencing your life development, your continuation. Culture is like the earth, the dirt is very rich, but every single one will put their own seed and have their own flower. A flower, a bird \u2013 to use this as a metaphor to experience our life\u2026through this subject we can imagine ourselves as real flower. We can exchange positions: we are man but have the heart of a woman. If you have this exchange position, how do you continue your life, how do you make the flower bloom?<\/em><\/p>\n

In terms of the differences and influences of Chinese vs. Western dance, she said, \u201cWe are inside our experience. Dance comes from everything that influences us and we don\u2019t always know where it comes from. Lucky we are artists, there are no borders between us and the world, culture, religion\u2026We are open, totally, to the world. People from Western countries have lots of questions about modern dance in China \u2013 its only 10 years old.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Asked if it was difficult to study modern dance in a country that has experienced it for only a short time, Yanjinzi responded, \u201cTo learn a body language it takes a lifetime, to learn an idea, a concept, philosophy takes a short time. Once you wake up, you wake up, you scream\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

When Yair Vardi asked Yanjinzi how long it usually took her to create a dance, she said, \u201cEvery moment I\u2019m thinking and imagining, [while] working, sleeping\u2026[making a dance takes] One month \u2013 making a dance is very fast. All the time the emotion is cooking, when its ready\u201d \u2013 she concluded with a sharp sudden clap of her hands in a gesture that required no translation.”<\/em> (link to the original post<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Performances will take place Tuesday, February 12th<\/sup> and Wednesday, February 13th<\/sup> at 21:00.<\/p>\n

The Gansu Provincial Troupe of Song and Dance will present The Evening Party, that showcases the traditional music and dance of the Gansu Province. The colorful and intricately detailed set and costumes are dazzling. The choreography is by Ren Manci, head of the dance troupe of the Gansu Opera House.<\/p>\n

Performances will take place Friday, February 15th<\/sup> at 21:00, and a performance for all ages on Saturday, February 16th<\/sup> at 12:00.<\/p>\n
