\u201cI wonder which of the many Joans we are going to see,\u201d said one fan as the audience streamed into the Mann Auditorium last Saturday night to hear Joan Armatrading in concert. The versatile musician has enjoyed a career that spans 38 years, and in that time has experimented with different musical styles, from pop to blues and rock. The woman in the black suit who came onto the stage was the Joan everyone was waiting for \u2013 singing out \u201cShow Some Emotion\u201d in her strong, full voice.<\/p>\n

She went straight into \u201cSomething\u2019s Gotta Blow\u201d from her CD \u201cInto the Blues\u201d (2007), before saying hello to the audience \u2013 who let her know: \u201cWe love you!\u201d Capable of unleashing a storm of powerful emotion when she sings, when she\u00a0spoke to the audience\u00a0Armatrading revealed a surprisingly \u201cproper\u201d demeanor and charm, marked by that slant British humor. Having recently released a new CD \u2013 \u201cThis Charming Life\u201d, she said, \u201cThe show will consist of songs\u2026some you have never heard before in your life, but they will instantly become your favorites. You\u2019ll say \u201cLove and Affection\u201d used to be my favorite\u2026\u201d Interrupted by a burst of applause, she continued, \u201cThank you so much, I\u2019m so pleased you agree with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the next number, \u201cAll the Way From America\u201d (1980) received an enthusiastic response from the audience, she wanted to get everyone moving \u2013 but couldn\u2019t make it happen. Not one to be derailed by circumstance, at the song\u2019s end, she said, \u201cIt was too soon, wasn\u2019t it? It was definitely too soon because it was a mess!\u201d Songs from her new CD were well received, but after \u201cLove and Affection\u201d\u00a0 – with a terrific sax solo interlude \u2013 drew so much love from the audience, she was happy to acknowledge, \u201cSo that\u2019s still your favorite, then?\u201d<\/p>\n

From the anthem-like \u201cMe, Myself, I\u201d (1980) to the heartbreaking \u201cThe Weakness in Me\u201d (1999) Joan sang from the heart to a hall full of loyal and appreciative fans who sang a harmonious a cappella on the chorus of \u201cWillow\u201d (1977) but really rocked out with Joan on the closing number \u201cDrop the Pilot\u201d (1983): I\u2019m the one you need, I\u2019m the one you need\u2026<\/p>\n
