The French Institute will present a Night of Ideas on January 26, 2017 at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. In the spirit of similar events taking place in Paris, as well as 30 other cities worldwide on the theme of “Our Common World,” the focus here will be on women – Israeli and French – who have influenced our world in different disciplines. The event is open to the public, free of charge, but advance registration is required. Write to: nightofideas@ambfr-il.org.

The evening will begin at 18:30 with opening introductions by Suzanne Landau, Director of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and Barbara Wolffer, Director of the French Institute in Israel. Panel discussions moderated by French journalist Laure Adler will begin at 19:15, with four sessions throughout the evening, interspersed with musical interludes in a tribute to Nina Simone. Among the Israeli speakers will be: Stav Shaffir, Ruth Kedar, Samah Salaime Egbariya; French panelists will include: journalist Florence Aubenas, Controller General of places where people are deprived of liberties (such as prisons) Adelina Hazan, and novelist Marie Darrieussecq.

The common world is what we enter when we are born and what we leave behind when we die. It transcends our lifespan into past and future alike; it was there before we came and will outlast our brief sojourn in it. It is what we have in common not only with those who live with us, but also with those who were here before and with those who will come after us.

Hannah Arendt, The Human Condition
