Israel Festival 2012 – Free Events

The annual Israel Festival will be taking place this year between May 23rd and June 19th, and in addition to performances by various international and Israeli artists, the public can also attend an array of free events including theatre, children’s show and nightly jazz. Check out the following list of free music, dance, and theatre shows going on throughout the Festival:

Music

Into the Woods: A Musical – 10/6/2012, 14:00 and 17:00 at the Jerusalem Theatre Rebecca Crown Auditorium

Stage Director: Julia Pevzener
Musical Composer and Conductor: Nir Cohen

Some of our favourite fairytale characters including Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella are sent on a journey into the forest. The characters must join forces in order to return safely home. The show will be accompanied by the music of Stephen Sondeim.

Concert Orchestra – 10/6/2012, 20:00 at the Jerusalem Theatre Henry Crown Auditorium

The Jerusalem Academy of Music symphony orchestra will be playing works by Frank Liszt, Paul Ben-Haim, Claude Debussy and Alexander Borodin. The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance is under the musical direction of Eitan Globerson.

Multidisciplinary Music – 10/6/2012, 23:00 at the Jerusalem Theatre Jazz Club

An ensemble composed of outstanding students of Eastern music from the Multidisciplinary musical department will perform, followed by a late night jam session.

Theatre

A Night at the Museum – Kumkum Theatre – 27/5 at 20:30 and 22:45; 1/6 at 13:30 and 15:30 at the Jerusalem Theatre Foyer

A glimpse into the secret life of the classical Greek sculpture Zeus. At night, as the museum closes, he can finally shed his representational role and come to life.

Sisters Street 3 – Mystery Theatre – 14/6 at 19:00 at the Jerusalem Theatre Foyer

An improvisational show combining humor, audience participation and a surprise twist.
Art Exhibitions

Panorama of Prague” Photo Exhibition – 30/5 – 19/6 in the Rebecca Crown Auditorium Foyer

In cooperation with the Czech Embassy in Israel, the festival will be hosting this photo exhibition examining past and present views of Prague’s rich architectural culture and history.

Out of Context” – An incorporated collage using tissue, by Avital Bar-on Isakov – 17/5 – 17/6 at the Chopin entry Foyer, Crown Building

Between 2011 – A Parallel Universe” by Motke Bloom – 15/5 – 16/5 at the Theatre Gallery

Memories” – A group exhibition of the Israeli Quilters Association – 20/5/ – 20/6, Schrober Theatre Foyer

Jazz

Nightly jazz performances will be held in the theatre’s foyer and courtyard.
Some recommended highlights:

28/5/12 at 23:30 – American jazz and gospel singer Tekora Rogers will be performing her usual sublime blend of jazz, blues, and gospel vocals.

29/5/12 at 23:30 – the Israeli French gypsy band SumSum will be performing their energetic, outback jazz dance music.

4/6/12 at 23:30 – Shmemel, a contemporary mix of groove, rock, jazz, and Balkan beats. Very, very groovy and highly recommended.

5/6/12 and 8/6/12 – the one and only Jaroslav Jakubovitz, a Czech-Israeli native, today resides in the US and is considered one of the leading saxophonists. He will be performing together with singer Brenika Kohut and trombonist Peter Plassnik from the Czech Republic, as well as Israelis Arad Yeni on trumpet, Warren Brown on trombone, Adi Rennert on keyboards and Israel Nahum on drums.
