Kippur War Memories – a documentary by Amos Gitai

The film, made in 1997, more than 20 years after the Yom Kippur war, reflects on Gitai’s personal experiences during the war. A student of architecture at the time, Gitai was called to reserve duty during the war as part of a helicopter rescue team sent to administer first aid to soldiers. He recorded his reserve duty experiences on 8mm footage, On October 11, 1973 – Gitai’s 23rd birthday – the helicopter was shot down by a Syrian missile on the Golan Heights. The documentary revisits the events and their lasting impact on the lives of Gitai and his fellow crewmembers, as the survivors try to piece together their memories of those moments.

The materials of “Kippur – War Memories” formed the basis for Gitai’s feature film “Kippur” which was screened at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
