International Hanoch Levin Festival: June 17 – 26, 2013

Bawdy, poetic, incisive and scathingly witty, the late Israeli playwright Hanoch Levin is a powerful presence  on the Israeli and international stage. The Cameri Theatre presents the first International Hanoch Levin Festival, paying tribute to this great writer, with events taking place at the Cameri, Habima and Gesher Theatres from June 17 – 26, 2013.

Six international productions and eleven Israeli productions of Levin’s plays will be presented, as well as discussions, staged readings of plays that have not been produced, and an exhibition of photographs of Levin’s plays by Gadi Dagon, and live music in the foyer of the Cameri Theatre every night. Visiting productions include The Business of Living and Popper from Warsaw, The Whore from Ohio from Paris, Suitcase Packers from Moscow’s famed Mayakovsky Theater, the monodrama Menshel and Romanska from La Jolie Pourproise, France, and Requiem, from Lubliana in Slovenia. The plays will be performed in the original language of the visiting theatre, with surtitles in Hebrew, English, French and Russian.

Among the Israeli productions featured in the festival are: The Cameri Theatre productions of Requiem, Popper, The Suitcase Packers and Thrill My Heart; Gesher Theatre production of Yakish and Poopche; the Beit Lessin production of Labor of Life; the Habima production of A Man is Standing Behind  a Seated Woman; the Yiddishspiel production of Solomon Grip; the Mikro Theatre production of Shozes & Bjijina; The Nissan Nativ Acting Studio will present Levin’s controversial political cabaret Queen of the Bathtub and The Undecided.
