Get ready for a classical concert that focuses on the funny – humorous art songs by composers classical and contemporary, Israeli and from all over the world.

The art song has long been an important vehicle of musical expression, not just in Europe but in Israeli culture as well. The “Shira Shir” concert series aims to bring together admirers of the genre – both in the audience and on the stage – and combine contemporary Israeli songs with the art song tradition.

Dr. Ido Ariel is a pianist and accompanist, Head of the Vocal Department at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and the man behind “Shira Shir”. He’s gathered a team of promising Israeli singers to perform the various Shira Shir concerts, which are arranged according to subject (Wayfaring Songs, Erotic Songs, Childhood Songs). Two soloists take part in each concert, with Ido Ariel accompanying them on piano.

“Songs of Humor” will include songs by Beethoven, Mahler, Rossini, Copland, Sasha Argov and more. This concert will feature the voices of two of Israel’s busiest young stars, Oded Reich and Yael Levita.

Soprano Yael Levita recently returned from a two-year stint in Germany, where she lent her talents to the Halberstadt Opera. Her repertoire spans operatic roles such as the Queen of the Night as well as operetta, and these days she can be heard at the Fringe Opera in Yaffo.

Baritone Oded Reich is a rising star at the Israeli Opera and has sung a variety of roles from Mozart to Menotti, from Bach to Yehezkel Braun. A graduate of the Meitar Studio, he performs in many of the Opera’s productions, most recently the Notary in Don Pasquale, and he will also be singing the role of Luther in the upcoming Tales of Hoffmann.
