Good things coming our way from down under – Australian Film Week will take place in the Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel Aviv and Holon Cinematheques. Now in its 10th edition, the festival is sponsored by the Australian Embassy in Israel and AICE, and the films to be shown are:

Tracks (Australia, 112 min, 2013, English with Hebrew subtitles)
Director: John Curran; Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver

Robyn Davidson took a nine-month long journey in 1977 across 2,700 kilometers of desert, from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, with her dog, four camels and National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan documenting the journey. Tracks is a drama based on Davidson’s memoir of that journey.

Mystery Road (Australia, 112 min, 2013, English with Hebrew subtitles)
Director: Iven Sen; Cast: Aaron Pedersen, Hugo Weaving

Detective Jay Swan (Aaron Pedersen) returns to his home town, Winton Queensland, to investigate the murder of a teenage girl, Julie Mason. A dark crime thriller with the feel of a Western, the film touches on issues of racial and social tensions in Australia. As he works on the case, Indigenous detective Swan reveals a network of crime that involves and endangers Aboriginal youth, a network that reaches even into his own family.

I Am A Girl (Australia, 88 min, 2013, English, French and Khmer with Hebrew subtitles)
Director: Rebecca Barry
Barry’s documentary explores what it is like to grow up female in the 21st century. The film’s website states: “Being born a girl means that you are more likely to be subjected to violence, disease, poverty and disadvantages than any other group on the planet.” The film looks at the lives of six girls, each growing up in a different culture. The film spans the globe, looking at Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, Afhanistan, the USA and Australia.

Red Obsession (France/UK/China/Australia/Hong Kong, 75 min, 2013, English with Hebrew subtitles)
Director: David Roach, Warwick Ross

The secrets of the vine are explored in this documentary that travels from Bordeaux to China, interviewing wine makers and wine lovers from around the world. Narrated by Russel Crowe, the film focuses on Bordeaux wine. Cheers!
