Brodsky/Baryshnikov will hold its Israeli premiere on January 19, 2016 at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv, with performances running through January 24, 2016. The solo work based on the poems of Joseph Brodsky, was created for Baryshnikov by Alvis Hermanis, Director of the New Riga Theater in Riga, Latvia.

It is a literary and personal journey through Brodsky’s poems, ranging from his early works in the 1950s, and up to the 1990s. Baryshnikov first read Brodsky’s poetry as a youth. The two met in New York in 1974, and the poet became a friend and mentor to the young dancer. Joseph Brodsky was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1987 and he became the United States Poet Laureate in 1991. Baryshnikov and Brodsky remained close until the poet’s death in 1996.

Baryshnikov has developed a relationship with the Suzanne Dellal Centre and Israeli audiences over the past few years. In 2010 he gave a memorable dance performance with the dancer Ana Laguna “Three Solos and a Duet,” performing the works of choreographers Mats Ek, Alexei Ratmansky and Benjamin Millepied. The following year he revealed a more theatrical side with In Paris, and in 2012 he presented an exhibition of his photographs “Dance This Way.”

Brodsky/Baryshnikov will be performed in Russian, with Hebrew subtitles.
