“Theatre in Israel would be better if it dealt with…” – that is the sentence that participants were asked to complete in the first stage of the 14/48 project. A new addition to the Short Theatre Festival, 14/48 will take place at Tzavta, December 24 & 25, 2010.

The 8 plays produced for the Short Theatre Festival in Tzavta from December 22 – 25 (read more about the plays here), were selected through an exacting process by an artistic committee, and developed under artistic guidance from script to stage.

Not so 14/48.

Instead of an artistic committee, a lottery will decide which of the 7 writers, 7 directors and 26 actors will work together for 48 hours to create two evenings of 7 ten minute plays. The daring participants are:

Playwrights: Yoni Lahav, Ala Halihal, Dana Idisis, Yoav Bartal, Oded Liphshitz, Shai Ben Atar, Yimi Visler
Directors: Ari Remez, Issi Mamanov, Yael Tilman, Alon Cohen, Mor Frank, Ofer Amram, Udi Ben Sa’adya
Actors: Orit Nahmias, Ruti Asrai, Riki Blich, Debbie Yablonka, Hila Sorjon, Liraz Hamami, Carmit Mesilati, Yarden Gilboa, Michal Levi, Rinat Mattub, Ayelet Robinson, Liron Ben Sasson, Ruth Resiuk, Oded Menster, Adi Eisenman, Gur Pipshkovitz, Oded Guggenheim, Yossi Vassa, Yoav Heyman, Ohad Knoller, Ishai Golan, Alon Fridman, Yaakov Tamari, Harel Morad, Daniel Sabag, Hai Maor.

On Thursday, the 7 playwrights will draw a topic and begin writing, knowing only the number and gender of the actors. They will then have eight hours to write. The next morning the 7 directors and 26 actors draw lots to decide in which play they will take part, and they will all have eight hours to rehearse. At 21:00 Friday night the completed (or not) production will be performed in front of an audience. At the end of the evening, the audience gets to choose the topic for the next play – and the cycle begins again for a total of 14 plays in 48 hours.

14/48 Performances will take place at Tzavta, 30 Ibn Gvirol Street, Tel Aviv on Friday, December 24 and Saturday, December 25 at 21:00, with the possibility of additional shows added at 23:00. Tickets for 14/48 are 20 NIS and will be available for purchase at the time of the performance.
