The Suzanne Dellal Centre will host dance companies from South Korea and Japan this coming March, giving Israeli audiences an opportunity to experience dance that has developed from within a different culture, each relating in its own way to the international contemporary dance scene.

The Choe Contemporary Dance Company from South Korea will perform The Argument on March 1st at 21:00 and March 2nd at 14:00.

Rokujo from Japan will be performed on March 12th and 13th at 21:00.

Sang-cheul Choe, artistic director of The Choe Contemporary Dance Company, merges traditional elements with contemporary dance. The Argument uses multi-media visual elements with dance to express a unique artistic perspective on arguing as well as the creative process. Choreographer, composer, writer, designer and lighting designer argue their ideas on time, space, color and sound; all in relation to their concern over the state of the world. Choe, recipient of the 2010 Best Choreography Award in Korea, is a professor of dance and in charge of programming for the International Modern Dance Festival Korea.

Rokujo, choreographerd by Haruka Ueda, uses Japanese traditional dance theatre in a dance inspired by The Tale of Genji, the classic novel attributed to Murasaki Shikibu in the 11th century. A colorful, tempestuous tale of forbidden love between Rokujo, widowed at the age of twenty, and Genji. Haruka Ueda has also explored works from the Western literary canon in his choreography, including a production of King Lear at Japan’s New National Theatre in 2000, with Min Tanaka in the lead role, and Lady Macbeth in 2003. The performance of Rokujo at the Suzanne Dellal Centre takes place in the context of celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations between Israel and Japan, and is sponsored by the Japanese Embassy in Israel.

All performances will take place at the Suzanne Dellal Centre, 5 Yehieli Street, Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv. Tickets may be ordered online, or call: 035015656.
