Tamer Nafar - DAM

When global & local start jamming – that’s when things get interesting. Café Gibraltar presents the Glocali Festival, now in its 3rd edition, with Palestinian hip hop, Kurdish groove, Ethiopian jazz and 100% proof Russian music on May 24th at the Barby Club. DAM, Ilana Eliya, Abate Berihun & Omri Mor, and Kriminal Project will take the stage for an amazing evening – but first, check out tonight’s pre-festival event: the Tel Aviv premiere of Jackie Salloum’s film Slingshot Hip Hop at Kolnoa Beit Ha’am (the people’s cinema), tonight, Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 20:30. For the complete Glocali Festival program, click here.

Salloum’s film follows Palestinian hip hop, with a focus on DAM, making the connection between the music and the political environment in which it is created. The much acclaimed film has received awards at Sundance; Films de Femmes, France; Beirut International Film Festival; Granada Festival Cine del Sur, Spain and many more.

From the film’s website: Slingshot Hip Hop braids together the stories of young Palestinians living in Gaza, the West Bank and inside Israel as they discover Hip Hop and employ it as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and poverty. From internal checkpoints and Separation Walls to gender norms and generational differences, this is the story of young people crossing the borders that separate them.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with members of DAM moderated by Nirit Ben Ari. Entrance is FREE.
