Shining a light in the darkness for youth at risk, a benefit concert will take place at The Barby on March 9, 2013 to support Migdalor Hashomer, a youth center in Petach Tikvah. Opening their hearts and performing will be The Angelcy, Daniela Spector, Uzi Ramirez (Feinerman) (accompanied by a string quartet!), Guy & Yahel hosting Tzlil Danin, and Yael Shoshana Cohen – what a line-up! Come to support the Migdalor, come because you care, come for the music, because it’s going to be an amazing night!

Migdalor means “lighthouse” in Hebrew. The center is jointly run by Elem, a nonprofit organization that reaches out to youth in distress, the Shomer HaTzair youth group and the Petach Tikvah Municipality. Elem has programs that offer aid and counseling for runaways, homeless, drug-addicted youth or those who are involved in prostitution, yet the compelling aspect of Migdalor and similar youth centers run by Elem in different locations in Israel, is that they offer a welcoming, safe place to hang out, a place to go with all problems – big or small, a place that has the power not only to help troubled youth, but to help young people before their problems get out of hand.

These centers need all the support they can get. Just a little over a year ago, Hafuch, the Elem-run youth center in Tel Aviv, was forced to close for lack of funds after 14 years. (Read more about it here and here) Testimony to the impact of these centers is the fact that the very young people who turn to Hafuch for help, mounted a protest to call attention to the center’s financial plight in the hopes of finding help and funding – either from the Tel Aviv Municipality, or from private donors, but to no avail. Hafuch was forced to close and now Tel Aviv’s young people are literally back to hanging out on the street – on the roof of Dizengof Center, by the cinematheque, and other places where the only professional counseling available is from the sellers at the nearby kiosk.

Hafuch closed its doors last year, let’s keep Migdalor open and shining.
