Lorca portrays a repressive culture and its tragic influence through the character of Bernarda Alba, who immerses herself and her daughters in mourning and confinement following the death of her husband.  The role of Bernarda will be played by Mohammad Bakhri. Munir Bakhri previously directed a production of The House of Bernarda Alba eleven years ago in Arabic at the Al Midan Theatre in Nazareth. It was in this production that Munir and Mohammad Bakhri created this unique interpretation of Bernarda. According to the director, casting a man as Bernarda expresses a feminist approach that emphasizes the fact that despite the apparent power Bernarda holds over her daughters, she is in fact powerless. In this production, they will be recreating the role in Hebrew.

Lorca’s critique of the oppression of women is not only a timeless work of art, but painfully relevant to current events in Israel.
