“Heroes and Monsters” ICON TLV – Israel’s International Science Fiction and Fantasy Festival will take place at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque September 25 – 30, 2010. But before the festival gets underway – there are movies to be made! The festival staff will be filming three short movies on Wednesday, September 15 at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, featuring – YOU!  The plan is to shoot sci/fi and fantasy heroes, monsters, or any other costume your imagination can come up with (or find lurking in the back of the closet) around the cinematheque. So get creative, go wild and write to press@icon.org.il with your full name, age, description of your costume and what hours you are free on the 15th.

Even mythical creatures deserve a Hebrew name of their own and word wizards in the crowd are invited to participate in a translation competition co-sponsored by ICON and the Israel Translators Association, with the linguistic consultation of the Academy of the Hebrew Language. The Chimera, Basilisk, Gryphon, Banshee, Kelpie and Kraken do not have a counterpart in Hebrew. If you choose to accept the ICON challenge and invent a Hebrew name for these terrifying fantastic creatures, send your entries to MonsterContest@icon.org.il by Sunday, September 19 at 9:00am with your full name and the name of the mythical creature, a short (100 words max) explanation for the chosen translation, and your contact information. Competition judges will receive anonymous entries for review and prizes will be awarded for the top three translations. Full competition details (in Hebrew) can be found on the ICON TLV page.

For the truly heroic, ICON TLV announces a short film competition in memory of Lior Yardeni, a true Telavivian, dedicated ICON goer and an avid fan of science fiction films who turned his passion into professional expertise, creating and producing stereoscopic 3D films. The competition begins on Sunday, September 26 at noon. Participants will have 72 hours to create, complete and deliver a science fiction, fantasy or horror film by Wednesday, September 29, 2010. A first prize of 7,500 NIS and second prize of 2,500 NIS will be awarded to the winners, thanks to the generosity of the Yardeni family. Dedicated to encouraging the genre in Israel, ICON TLV is not only launching the first competition of this kind, but will also help budding film makers rent the necessary equipment at a discount.

The competition is open to all film makers – professionals, amateurs and virgins. Participants must register as a team, complete information and registration forms can be downloaded from the ICON TLV page.  Send the completed forms to: Israelifilm@icon.org.il and the registration fee of 220 NIS to ICON Festival, Tel Aviv Cinematheque, 2 Sprinzak Street, Tel Aviv 64738 by September 26, 2010.

ICON TLV is produced jointly with the Tel Aviv Municipality and is supported by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Israeli Ministry of Culture.
