Concerts at Israel’s Open University provide a wonderful opportunity to enjoy first-rate performances and learn more about the music you love. As part of their noon concert series, Trio Ir Shalem will be performing works by Beethoven and Mendelssohn, tomorrow (April 11) at 12:00. Introducing each piece will be Anat Sharon, the series’ director.

Trio Ir Shalem has been performing in Israel and abroad since 1993. The musicians bring with them a history of excellence, and all have established careers as soloists. Yuri Gluchovsky, the ensemble’s violinist, studied and taught at the Gorky Conservatory while cellist Alexander Sinelnikov and pianist Gabriela Talroze both hail from the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg. As Trio Ir Shalem, they perform a wide-ranging repertoire, from classical to contemporary Israeli composers, and even issued a CD in 2007.

Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D minor (Op. 49 no. 1) was composed in 1839 and has remained one of the composer’s most popular works, for which Schumann described him as “the Mozart of the nineteenth century”. The composer makes full use of each instrument, and violin, cello and piano converse together in exquisite melodies and harmonies.

Beethoven’s Piano Trio in C minor (Op. 1 no. 3) is the last part of a set of piano trios written for Prince Lichnowsky, a respected patron of the arts in Vienna and one of Beethoven and Mozart’s most important supporters. Beethoven dedicated seven of his compositions to the Prince, before a vicious quarrel ended their friendship. The piece was first performed at the Prince’s home in 1793, where Vienna’s most venerated composer, Josef Haydn, advised Beethoven not to publish it. Despite his indignation, Beethoven made some alterations to the piece and later reworked it into the C minor string quintet.

The concert will take place on Thursday, April 11 at 12:00 at the Chais Auditorium on the Open University campus (1 University Road, Ra’anana).

Tickets cost only 25 NIS and can be ordered by phone at *3337 or 03-5114412, or via website (in Hebrew).

Next on the Open University’s calendar, on April 25, is a concert of piano quartets played by the beloved pianist Victor Stanislavsky and members of the Israel Philharmonic. This concert will be part of the University’s “Tzlilim” series.
