Noa Eshkol - Chamber Dance Group

The Batsheva Dance Company will showcase the choreography of Noa Eshkol, creator of the Eshkol-Wachman Movement Notation with performances of the Chamber Dance Group in January and February in the Varda Studio. The group will perform Variations Theme – a selection from dance suites created by Noa Eshkol, according to her unique approach to composition, and each show will be followed by a discussion with the performers.

The dances are composed according to the notation system and rely on Eshkol’s rules of composition. Eshkol saw dance as an independent entity, distinct from the effects of scenery, costumes and music.  Eshkol’s dances performed without the accompaniment of music, which she felt affects the way one experiences dance, yet one can discern an affinity between musical composition and the composition in the dance.

This relationship is expressed in the notation itself, a way of recording and transmitting information on movement that is to a certain extent after musical notation, with dancers and parts of the body assigned roles, similar to musical instruments in an orchestra. Compositional motifs such as series, canon and fugues can also be seen in Eshkol’s work.

The Chamber Dance Group specializes in performing these unique works of Noa Eshkol. The veteran members of the group worked with Noa Eshkol for many years, and they were the first performers of many of these dances, in recent years they have been joined by a cohort of young performers. Performing in Variations – Themes at the Varda Studio will be: Racheli Nul-Kahana, Ruth Sella, Hamutal Peled, Mor Bashan and Noga Goral.

Performances will take place on January 12th at 19:30, January 13th at 14:30, February 3rd at 14:30 and February 4th at 20:00, in the Varda Studio, Suzanne Dellal Centre. Tickets may be ordered online, or call: 03- 5171471.
