Compagnie Heddy Maalem from France will perform “The Rite of Spring” on November 2 & 3 at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv and November 5th at the Kriger Center in Haifa. Stravinsky’s famous piece gets a vigorous workout from choreographer/artistic director Heddy Maalem.

Born in Batna, in the Aurès Mountain region of Eastern Algeria to an Algerian father and French mother, Maalem’s interest in the body and movement began not in dance, but rather in his training as a boxer. Founding his company in 1990, Maalem explores human themes through focusing on the body. In this work, Maalem has brought together 14 dancers from: Mali, Benin, Nigeria, Mozambique, Côte d’Ivoire France, and Guadeloupe.

Maalem says of Le Sacre du Printemps: “Our dawn finds us enmeshed in the process of recognizing the forces knotting our bodies, we are dancing. To the same chord, united in complete dis-harmony to celebrate this Sacre, dancing what is dead, what lives again and will die. Show the ritual, that which mixes death with life, bones and ash. To say again what a man does to celebrate the gift of such a terrible joy.”
