Confederation House Jerusalem will host a tribute to filmmaker Ronit Elkabetz (1964 – 2016) on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 20:00, as part of its Heroes of Culture series.

The program is curated by Sari Shavit, and the poets reading from Elkabetz’s works will be Neomi Hashmonai, Lee Maman, Meital Nissim, Adi Keissar, and Sari Shavit. The evening will be accompanied by a musical performance with Neomi Hashmonai (vocals and piano) and Neta Ram (bass).

Under the heading “Cracks of Light” the tribute will look at the work of Ronit Elkabetz through the tension she creates between women’s socially silenced identity and the screen, which gives her freedom and a voice. Actor, screenwriter, and director, Elkabetz was born in Beersheva to a Moroccan Jewish family. She transformed the silences and boundaries that were forced on her into raw material for creative work. In the trilogy of films co-created with her brother Shlomi Elkabetz – To Take a Wife (2004), Shiva (2008), Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem (2014) – she exposed the reality of women trapped in social, legal, and family norms, setting at the heart of these films the character of Viviane Amsalem, a woman who insists on making her voice heard.

Selections from Elkabetz’s writing for film will be read as a literary text, open to interpretation, shedding light on the linguistic aspects, imagery, and visions that make her work vivid, moving and relevant.

“Heroes of Culture” is a series dedicated to Israeli creators who left an indelible mark on Israeli culture. Confederation House is under the artistic direction of CEO Effie Benaya.

Tickets may be purchased online from Confederation House, or call 02-5399360.
