The Harlem Globetrotters will appear in Israel for one night only – Thursday, May 3, 2012, at the Nokia Stadium, Tel Aviv. The exhibition basketball team’s funny antics are equaled only by their amazing skill and coordination with an almost magical ability to make almost impossible shots.

TNT Maddox

Rookie player TNT Maddox is the 9th woman to play on a professional men’s basketball team in the U.S. The first was also a Globetrotter – Hall of Famer Lynette Woodard.

The legendary Globetrotters started out on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, where the original team members grew up. A serious competitive team, they maintained a very successful record alongside a penchant for the theatrical, beating the all-white Minneapolis Lakers team for a significant win in 1948 and 1949. Ironically, integration made it harder to attract top players to the all-black team, and the focus of the team gradually shifted to entertainment.

The Globetrotters count among their numbers NBA stars Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Connie “The Hawk” Hawkins, Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton (the first African-American player to be drafted by the NBA)  Meadowlark Lemon and other great names in basketball. During their visit to Israel, the Globetrotters will meet with Israeli youth teams and students, will visit children’s wards in hospitals and will host kids on the court during the game.
