Life/Art invites the public to walk the line between art and life with intriguing encounters, performances and installations – all the way to the “Future of Death” at the Bezalel, Yaffo 23, Jerusalem gallery through the month of June.

The opening event took place in the gallery – designed for the exhibit by Hillel Roman – this past Thursday, May 19, 2011 as part of the Mishkenot Sha’ananim Philosophy Festival, with DJ Spooky and a discussion with Dr. Roy Brand, Director and Chief Curator of Yaffo 23; Joshua Simon and Mushon Zer-Aviv – photos and video clips are already on the Yaffo Twentythree facebook page. But this is a scene that is meant to be experience LIVE!

Beginning June 1, 2011, Yaffo 23 will be hosting a dizzying abundance of events in cooperation with the Jerusalem Season of Culture.  The eclectic line up in semi-chronological order:

Dissolving Localities – The Lab (Hamaabada) presents Avi Belleli (Nikmat Hatraktor – Tractor’s Revenge), Rea Mochiach, Thomas Köner (D), Kangding Ray (FR), Arik Futerman, Moran Gutman and Emmanuel Witzthum – the seven musicians ventured out to capture Jerusalem live over the course of a week then created a 90 remix to take the audience on a wild mind trip through Jerusalem.
Open Dress Rehearsal – June 1 at 18:30; performances June 2 at 20:00, June 3 at 14:00. 30 NIS includes a first drink.

The Lottery – Saar Székely and Keren Sheffi conduct a performance/social experiment in the gallery space. All visitors entering the site become subject to a set of rules creating a parallel social reality, receiving instructions selected randomly via computer. The computer generated instructions will create the framework for all interactions in this temporary community, blurring the distinctions between will and action, private and public. Must be seen to be believed…Thursday, June 2 at 20:00 – FREE and open to the public.

Republic – Anat Eisenberg will reverse expectations, and rather than screen a film, will film the audience. The audience is invited to play themselves in this ultimate participant/observer experience, under the instructions of a director. Everyone is a participant in this event as the director, two cameramen and the audience film five different scenes in the gallery on Sunday, June 5 at 20:00. The event is FREE and open to the public.

Not More and Not Less (two thirds) – Yonatan Vinitsky and Alon Goren combine performance and lecture with three outdoor sculptures as the catalysts for stories. Sunday, June 5, at around 20:30. The event is FREE and open to the public.

The Meeting of the Knesset Economic Affairs Committee on Natural Gas Royalties – Yonatan Levy and the Maayan Theatre present a documentary theatre reading describing the battle over revenues in which truth is stranger than fiction. Sunday, June 5 at around 21:30. The event is FREE and open to the public.

BYOB Jerusalem – curated by Picnic Magazine in partnership with BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer – Worldwide) “write” on the gallery walls with the artists in this massive party of images, music and video projections. The projections will be accompanied by a live performance by the Electro-vocal duo Crystal Babez and live DJ sets in collaboration with the Uganda Club. Monday, June 6 at 20:00. The event is FREE and open to the public – bring images & video.

Claire Waffel, artist in residence at Bezalel, Yaffo 23, Jerusalem will open a new installation in the gallery on Thursday, June 9 at 20:00.

Yaffo 23 in cooperation with the Culture Department and Hazira will host the A2 Company (London) for a ten day workshop at the gallery from June 9 – 21, 2011. Exploring the relationship between life and death, the workshop will conclude with two events/performances in front of a live audience. Read more about the A2 Company on their website, and get a glimpse of the future on this video clip.

The workshop is open to people of all ages, backgrounds, religion, experience and abilities. If you think that you would like to take part in this unusual project, please contact yaffo23jerusalem@gmail.com for further information and application forms.
