A celebration of Chinese dance will take place in February with the Beijing Modern Dance Company (BMDC) and the Chengdu Nationality Troupe CO., LTD performing at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv, with additional performances in Ashdod, Karmiel and Haifa from February 18 – 24, 2013.

The two companies represent different aspects of dance from China, with BMDC performing modern dance and the Chengdu Nationality Troupe CO., LTD performing traditional/folk dance.

This is the second visit to Israel for BMDC, who performed at TAPAC in 2009, as part of the Tel Aviv Dance Season. The company was founded in 1995 and has a diverse repertoire that merges traditional Chinese culture with a contemporary perspective, reflecting involvement with the international dance scene. The company has performed at international venues such as the Paris Opera, Berlin Opera, and at Joyce Theater in New York with Li Hanzhon and Ma Bo’s Rear Light, an evening length dance choreographed to Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

In Israel, BMDC will present The Blooming of Time, directed by Gao Yanjinzi. The dance relates to the passage of time and seasons through the feelings of flowers, informed by the traditional Chinese perspective on time and change.

The Chengdu Nationality Troupe CO., LTD will perform Heaven & Earth, a show for the whole family presenting folk traditions of South Western China. Traditional styles of martial arts, wedding dances, masked dances, and stories of life in the region will be conveyed in dance, accompanied by traditional music.
