Tzavta presents a loving tribute to the Queen of Hebrew Music and Israel Prize Recipient Shoshana Damari (1923 – 2006), on February 14, 2011 at 20:30.

Yonit Shaked-Golan, a classically trained singer connected to her Yemenite-Syrian roots through music, specializing in Israeli and ethnic songs, dedicates this evening to Shoshana Damari on the fifth anniversary of the legendary singer’s death. Shaked-Golan will sing the songs symbolizing an era, such as Kalaniyot (Anemones) and Tzarich leTzalzel Pa’amayim (You Must Ring Twice) composed by Moshe Vilensky to lyrics by Natan Alterman.

Shoshana Damari came with her family from Yemen to settle in Rishon LeZion in 1924. She began singing on the radio at age 14 and soon became known and loved for her powerful voice with its Yemenite intonation. The beauty and strength of her voice and spirit remained vibrant throughout her long career – at age 82 she teamed up with Idan Raichel, recording two tracks on Mima’amakim (From the Depths).

With her wide vocal range (contralto to mezzo-soprano) and interest in Hebrew music, Shaked Golan is an excellent interpreter of Damari’s songs. Shaked-Golan  graduated with a Master’s Degree from the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance in Jerusalem and has performed as a soloist with some of the best-known orchestras in Israel, such as: The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, The Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra, The Beer Sheba Sinfonietta Orchestra, and the Israel Stage Orchestra – Holon. Shaked-Golan also sings regularly in concerts produced by Dr. Gila Flam, Director of the Department of Music at the National Library of Israel, and has recorded music there as part of a project to preserve Israeli classical and artistic music.
